We are now running the Red Cross swim program.
ABOUT RED CROSS SWIM
To build Red Cross Swim, Red Cross took the best parts of the previous program and added in some great new features:
  • Brand new pre-school program
  • Shortened youth program 10 levels instead of 12
  • Stronger instructor development program
  • Greater focus on fitness and fun to help kids develop life-long healthy habits
We believe your child should develop swimming skills in a fun and encouraging environment. Our certified instructors use games and activities to teach and reinforce skills, while building his/her sense of security, thus creating a positive experience.
The new Red Cross Swim program consists of pre-school (including Parent Tot), Swim Kids, and Adult levels all with specific, associated skills, strokes, and safety lessons.

The preschool program (Parent & Tot)
Starfish and Duck
3 months - 23 months 4:1 Ratio
A rewarding water experience for adults with young children. It introduces infants and toddlers to the joys of water activity while developing basic skills and teaches parents/caregivers how to ensure safety at all times.
Sea turtle and Salamander
2 yrs - 4 yrs 2:1 Ratio
Children between 2 and 4 years of age develop their swimming in a fun and non-threatening environment. Basic skills are taught through fun games and activities. Pre-schoolers learn to overcome fears and build confidence, creating a positive swim experience.

Red Cross Swim Kids
4 yrs 3:1 Ratio
Red Cross is Canada's largest and most recognized swimming and water safety program. With an emphasis on swimming skills, water safety, and fitness activities, Red Cross sets the foundation for a lifetime of swimming and fitness. They offer:
  • Quality instructors train for more than 75 hours and have practical teaching experience.
  • Learning made fun through games and songs.
  • A balanced program that teaches swimming skills and water safety.
  • Swimmers acheive new skills, an increase in confidence, and gain a feeling of accomplishment.
The Red Cross Swim program has carefully defined performance criteria that is followed when evaluating

Instructors encourage swimmers to demonstrate that they have truely acquired the specific skill at least three times during the set of lessons.


Lifesaving and Leadership Courses
Swim Patrol: (4:1 Ratio)
3 Levels: Rookie, Ranger & Star:
This is the on-ramp to lifeguarding for 9-12 year olds who are ready to go beyond the regular Red Cross program. Content is organized in 3 groups, water proficiency, first aid and rescue. Swim Patrol develops swimming strength and efficiency with emphasis on Water Smart behavior. Skill drills enhance capability in the water, good physical conditioning and lifesaving judgment.
Bronze Star: (6:1 Ratio, Duration: 15-20 hrs)
Prerequisite: Minimum 12 years age
This course is designed to prepare candidates for Bronze Medallion by introducing fitness, water rescue and first aid components.
Bronze Medallion: (6:1 Ratio, Duration: 15-20 hrs)
Prerequisite: Minimum 13 years age OR Bronze Star
This award teaches an understanding of the lifesaving principles embodied in the four components of water rescue education - judgment, knowledge, skill and fitness. Rescuers learn tows/carries and defense/release methods in preparation for rescues of conscious and unconscios victims. Lifesavers also develop endurance in a timed swim.
Bronze Cross: (6:1 Ratio, Duration: 15-20 hrs)
Prerequisite: Bronze Star and Bronze Medallion OR Bronze Medallion and a minimum of 14 years of age.
This course is designed for lifesavers that want the challenge of more advanced training including an introduction to safe supervision in aquatic facilities.
National Lifeguard Service: (12:1 Ratio, Duration: approx. 40 hrs)
Prerequisite: Minimum of 16 years of age, Bronze Cross, and Standard First Aid & CPR "C".
National Lifeguard is a legal certificate for lifeguarding throughout the country, and the only lifeguard certificate recognized by the province of Ontario.
Red Cross Assistant Water Safety Instructor (AWSI): (10:1 Ratio, Duration: approx. 30 hrs)
Prerequisite: Minimum of 15 years of age and Bronze Cross.
This course introduces candidates to the foundation of instructional skills by focusing on the theoretical knowledge that supports learning and teaching. This course guides the knowledge and skills needed to become an AWSI, by focusing on teaching methods, learning styles, physical principles, progressions, communication, safety supervision and feedback. Candidates are also provided the opportunity to demonstrate and be evaluated on their understanding of skills and knowledge, through an eight-hour practical teaching experience and hands-on assignments.
Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI): (12:1 Ratio, Duration: approx. 40 hrs)
Prerequisite: Minimum of 16 years of age, Leaders or AWSI, and Bronze Cross or NLS.
This course prepares candidates to instruct the Red Cross Swim programs. Candidates focus on strategies to introduce and develop swimming and water safety skills in the Red Cross Swim Preschool, Red Cross Swim Kids and AquaAdults program curriculums. Candidates are required to complete twelve hours of in-water volunteer teaching.
